I think that the theme is if some one is mean to you be kind back because I could change their heart. This means to show them compassion. I think the theme is be kind back because Mr. Lincoln was nice to the boy even though the boy was not being nice to Mr. Lincoln. For example, since Gene likes birds, Mr. Lincoln taught him to treat people how he treats the birds.
Mr. Lincoln did not get mad when Gene said his dad called him names. Gene was late from school because he was helping with the birds. His dad was cross and said unkind words about Mr. Lincoln, but this still did not make Mr. Lincoln get angry. Also, the principal changed Gene's heart by being kind when ever Gene was mean to Mr. Lincoln. It makes me think that Mr. Lincoln is super nice because he would defend Gene and he cared about him.
